The Queensland Floods – Let’s Assist in the Recovery

Special Area Presidency Statement - January 2011

The state of Queensland has been experiencing its worst floods in history which has forced the evacuation of thousands of people. More than 26,000 homes have been fully or partially inundated by flood waters. To date, 15 people have died and 70 people are missing. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones and who have been devastated in other ways.
Many Church members have been affected by the floods. Some have lost their homes entirely, while others have experienced severe water inundation and loss of possessions. Thankfully no one has lost their life, and all of our members are accounted for and safe.
In light of the devastation caused by the recent flooding in Queensland, we invite members to dedicate Sunday 6th of February 2011 as a special day of fasting and prayer on behalf of those who are suffering and needing assistance, and, that the purposes of the Lord will be accomplished.
The Church is doing all it can to help those in need amongst its own membership. We are constantly in touch with the Area Seventy and stake presidents to ensure that no one who is suffering is left without assistance. Those who wish to make a donation to assist members of the Church who are victims of the flood may do so by contributing to Fast Offering. To assist flood victims from the wider community, donations may be made to the flood relief fund of your choice.
Priesthood leaders are also contacting local government bodies to determine ways in which Mormon Helping Hands and other service projects may be initiated to assist those not of our faith in rebuilding their communities. We commend the many Church members who are already helping their neighbors and friends in local recovery efforts. This will be a major Church contribution to this disaster.
Because of the extent of the Queensland disaster, we understand this will be a long process and Church members will be drawn into rebuilding programs which will take a lot of their time. We trust there will be understanding and patience for one another during the coming months.
President Monson and the Quorum of the Twelve are well aware of the events taking place in Australia at the present time. They send their love and best wishes for a safe and sure recovery. We thank you for your faithfulness and service and pray the Lord’s blessings upon you during this period of great trial.
Sincerely,
Elder Tad R Callister
Elder James J Hamula
